Rise of the machines!

This morning I plugged my external hdd into my office Mac. Nothing was detected! Tried on my colleague’s Mac… Nothing too! Even my external hdd has gone bonkers now!

It was fine yesterday. Actually, yesterday, my office Mac was acting weird too. The screen hanged (at Tono’s hadaka body :P) while I was trying to restart, so I force-shut it, and after booting up, it started emitting weird noises (sound of the Jet starting lol). Today the noise is gone, so I think the Mac is still working fine. But my ext hdd can’t be detected anymore. And I tried charging my ipod just now. When I plugged it in, it was detected initially, but after an hour, suddenly an error message said the device was removed unexpectedly or something, but nobody touched the connection at all lol… Now it can’t be detected already!

Ahhh~~~ Is there something wrong with my hands?
Is there some machine-destruction static energy in me?

Then, I called COMPAQ technical support about my laptop, they told me to do various things. And said they’ll get their service guys to collect it from me. But they said they won’t attempt to try to save the data in there… Hmm.. okay, now, what should I do? Is there a way to back up the hdd on my laptop manually? She told me to screw open my laptop and connect the hdd to another computer. Is this possible? I need to save my files!!! Any one tried that before? Do you know what kind of connection is it?

So, things I’ve to do tonight. Copy over all the data from my ext hdd to bf’s comp (hopefully it can be detected, I can’t afford to lose another 160gb of data!!!) Bring it back to office tomorrow and reformat it to FAT32. And test out whatever the COMPAQ technical support told me to do. Then call them back tomorrow for follow-up.

Sorry for all the recent personal rants… I think I’m going crazy.

  1. If your comp runs on Windows (XP or Vista) did you try hitting the F12 button right before the black screen with the Windows logo comes on? I think after you do that, a screen comes up with several options on what to do next…and I think one of those options is to boot in safe mode. Try that and see if you can’t use that to then save your data somewhere.
=( I hope you get it solved.

  2. yup i tried F8, F10, F12, and del key too haha.. i tried to get into safe mode. but hitting it doesn’t mate a diff… i have a day to save my files coz support ppl will be taking my baby away tml afternoon… thanks, stephi!

  3. taking out your hard disc and plug it onto another computer to get the datas will be an option. But the problem is, I am not sure if your laptop will still be under guarantee, if u try to open it up yourself. Maybe try asking the ppl at the service center to back it up for u, since they will probably have another similar laptop to plug your hard disc in.

    Good Luck.

  4. wow, that sucks.
hopefully naughtiest’s article will save the day then ne~ ^^
and violet’s also right..you have to consider your waranty..because doing certain stuffs to your comp will void it. It happened to me once. v_v
    your poor baby *pat pat*

  5. thanks so much, naughtiest, violet & stephi!!

last night, my bf & i took so much effort to unscrew the hdd out from the laptop (compaq ppl said it’s alright to remove “as long as nothing’s damaged”), we even went to buy new screw drivers coz the one in his house doesn’t fit.

then this morn, my colleague brought her hdd adaptor. and we realised there’s another layer of cover to unscrew. BUT the screws were so tight, after spending 30mins and getting our thumbs and fingers red and black lol, we finally managed to unscrew that cover, before realising that that the hdd is a different type *faints*. Hers is the type shown in the article that naughtiest gave~ while my hdd has a diff. kind of connection, the pins are different… her friend said it’s something to do with ATA and SATA or something like that…

compaq was supposed to collect my laptop this afternoon so i called to postpone it. they said that if they helped me to backup my data, they will charge $100!!! i was so angry yet i couldn’t scold the support guy lol. now i got a day or two to try to find a suitable hdd casing. and i’m supposed to be working now.. have a meeting in an hour’s time.. but i juz can’t concentrate on anything else! :(

  6. that’s suck ne~ hope u can rescues all yr data
the same thing was just happened to me too last month (can’t boot up) and the support guy didnt even bother to ask if i want to save all the data or not.. my work, takki’s files, everything was all gone T_T *wanna jump off the building and landed on/smash the support guy*
dont really hv any suggestion cuz im clueless but really hope u can save yr files ne~

  7. you-chan~ hahaha.. that was what i wanted to do to the support guy too. but i think the problem should be solve soon *fingers crossed*. after work, i went to a nearby computer shop, carrying 2 laptops (so heavy!) and bought an external hdd SATA case for $19.90! when i plugged in the hdd that i removed from my laptop, i can see all my files there!! yatta!!! now trying to copy some over… coz my bf’s comp doesn’t have that much space left… i hope i can get everything back soon!!!

  8. I’m late getting in to the discussion but things seem to be a bit better? I have no answers for u except one. Due to my own problems, we took the leap of doing a System Restore but to do it u have 2 be logged in as admin. which u can only do in safemode apparently. Found the easy way to go to safemode…this works for Windows XP dunno about Vista:

    Click Start
    Click Run
in box where it says OPEN type: MSCONFIG
    Click OK
Look at the tabs and find the one for BOOT.INI and
Click Safeboot (I clicked on “minimal”)
    Click Apply/Ok
    Restart computer

It will restart in safemode. No repeatedly pressing a key which I hate because half the time it doesn’t work for me :p (btw restore didn’t fix our prob but I did learn safemode booting the easy way!)

What is it lately with all of these computers? We all have 1 thing in common: T&T Should we be paranoid? LOL Is it their combined hotness? hehehe

  9. i managed to save most of my files!!! but… there isn’t enough space, so i left some inside the hdd and thinking i could save them to my office mac this morn.. but it turns out that… my mac office can’t read that particular folder (that has all my t&t stuff in it) :( i tink i’ll juz have to download them again…

  10. That sucks that you’ll have to D/L all that stuff again. =/ too bad there’s not a way to get it onto megaupload or onto another comp beside’s the one your working with.
I’m out of answers. It HAS to be the T&T hotness like Glenda said…cuz I was having problems the other day too. v__v

  11. ya.. it’s 12gb of data that’s left behind… so no way i can upload all of that to MU.. i think i’ll just try to download those again.. most of it are dramas.. so it’s not that bad.. genroku, taiyoukisetsu, r&jHQ, kimigaHQ, newsonna, kokoro-raw, etc… i can’t remember the rest.. but is that 12gb already? lol~

btw, glenda, my comp can’t even boot up, so there’s no way i can enter safe mode from windows ne… but it’s ok, today they’ll collect my laptop, and hopefully they’ll send it back to me asap (tho all will be reformatted, it’ll be a brand new start)~~

  12. First time I replied here… I barely come here before… ^^

I got the worse than you… last month I lost 400Gg files on my ext HDD.. I accidentally drop it and lost everything…
My KPop, Jpop, dorama files are gone… T_T

    ganbatte

  13. kamui~ hajmemashite!
i managed to salvage about 80-100gb of the data.. and lost about 12gb. it’ll take some time to get it back but i think it shud be fine… arigato ne!

  14. mich… so sorry to hear that your comp died on you… *hugs*
